چکیده
Introduction When the ACS founded its intramural program of epidemiological research in 1946, lung cancer death rates in men had increased approximately 5-fold since 1930, the first year for which mortality statistics encompassed most of the United States (1). Death rates from what had been the two leading fatal cancers in women, uterine (cervix and corpus combined) and stomach cancer, were decreasing, although lung cancer rates were just beginning to climb. Connecticut operated the only population-based tumor registry. Two activities that helped to ground the new program were collaborative efforts to improve the quality and availability of cancer surveillance data and the involvement of ACS volunteers in assembling large prospective cohort studies that could provide insights about cancer etiology. E. Cuyler Hammond, who first directed the program, saw in the rapidly expanding network of ACS volunteers an extraordinary human resource that could enroll and help to follow large prospective epidemiological cohorts. More than 50 years later, intramural epidemiological research at ACS remains the most active epidemiological program based in a private, voluntary health organization. Cohort studies and cancer surveillance continue to be central to the program. This article will describe the mission and research activities of the current Department of Epidemiology and Surveillance Research. It will also direct readers toward a variety of publications and Web-based resources and describe opportunities and guidelines for training and/or collaborative research.

Epidemiological models of carcinogenesis: the example of bladder cancer.
Epidemiological studies have clearly shown that smokers have an increased risk of bladder cancer. Chemical, biochemical, and molecular investigations indicate that such risk might be due to aromatic amines which are present in tobacco smoke. In particular, collaborative studies have shown that smokers have increased levels of hemoglobin-4-aminobiphenyl adducts in their blood and that these leve...

متن کاملWhole blood cryopreservation in epidemiological studies.
Standardized and cost-effective biological sample collection, processing, and storage procedures are needed in large-scale epidemiological studies to provide material for testing a broad range of etiological hypotheses. One component of sample collection in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial involves shipment of blood in acid-citrate-dextrose anticoagulant to a ce...
متن کاملCalcium, vitamin D, and colorectal cancer: a review of the epidemiologic evidence.
A protective effect of calcium on colorectal cancer, one of the most common malignancies in Western societies, has been supported primarily by results of in vitro animal studies. The present review summarizes the available epidemiological evidence for the association between calcium, vitamin D, and colorectal cancer. The overall results from over 20 published case-control and cohort studies sug...

Introduction The AACR Special Conference on The Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology of Cancer was held January 18–23, 2003 at Waikoloa, Hawaii. Approximately 400 attendees from around the world heard state-of-the-art talks, many with new data on methods and applications. A range of sessions covered epidemiological, statistical, and laboratory methods; genetic susceptibility and human biomonitori...
